This isn't so much "news," as it is a rant about the industry that I work in and why it is important to research the companies that you will be trusting your website with. I recently read on a client's previous web developer's page that they have been "designing websites since 1986". I must admit, I have not been designing websites that long. In fact, I have only been designing websites since 1994. Aside from the fact that I was a teenager in 1986, there is another reason I was not doing websites back then... WEBSITES DID NOT EXIST UNTIL 1991! The thing is, this is not only a blatant lie, but this can be verified by anyone, even if they don't know much about the history of web development. I know the history, not because I read about it, but because I was there, part of that history. I was designing websites in Silicon Valley and the Bay Area, long before some of these people here where we are currently located in NH, knew how to fill out an application for employment.
I must admit, I am not very patient when it comes to misrepresentation in my industry. The fact is, I see it often... So often. Most non-tech people may never check on the claims made by the company because they assume the company knows more than they do when it comes to the internet. While that is likely true in some cases, in many cases, people join fields like ours because they think it's easy, will make a quick buck, and they have some sort of way in (a parent owns a company and hires them to do their website assuming because they are good at playing a game on their phone, or computer, that they will somehow do a great job on a website).
As time passes (often a few months, or perhaps even a year or so), the person who did your website won't be able to keep up with demand. They will take weeks, rather than days, to make what appears to be a simple update. They won't return your phone calls. Or, as I have heard in one case from one of my clients, they will deliver your pizza, because their website company failed and they had to get another job. Why trust your business with a company likely to fail? We have not only been in business, doing website design for over 25 years, but we relocated in 2015, starting over, and now it's almost 2019, and we are not only still surviving, but we have thrived, and have continued to outgrow our competitors.
